Bryan Gerzicich and Hapoel Kiryat Shmona dropped a crucial decision at home on Monday to Maccabi Haifa who remained in first place in the Israeli Premier League and extended their lead to five points.

Hapoel Kiryat Shmona 0 1 Maccabi Haifa

Despite controlling most of the game, Kiryat Shmona came up short against perennial powers Maccabi Haifa who needed a 78th minute goal from Yaniv Katan from the penalty spot to win the game.

Bryan Gerzicich started and played a full 90 for Kiryat Shmona and picked up a yellow card in the 32nd minute.

US U20 international Alexander Zahavi did not dress for Maccabi Haifa.

Kiryat Shmona controlled possession throughout most of the match and the young Israeli international Elroy Cohen continued to create chances as he has all season long.

But scoring was once again difficult and it is clear that Kiryat Shmona miss their leading scorer Wiyam Amashe who is sidelined with an injury.

In the 78th minute, Maccabi Haifa's Mohammad Ghadir was fouled in the box by Kiryat Shmona keeper Danny Amos. On the penalty, Katan sent the ball into the net past Amos who guessed the wrong way giving Maccabi Haifa a the lead which is how it would end.

The win lifted first place Maccabi Haifa to 31 points and five points clear of Kiryat Shmona and Hapoel Tel Aviv who are even at 26 points.

Next week Hapoel Kiryat Shmona travel to take on 12th place Beitar Jerusalem and Maccabi Haifa will return home to host Maccabi Netanya.

Leo Krupnik was a 90th minute substitute for Maccabi Netanya in their 1-0 win over Hapoel Be'er Sheva on Saturday. In that game, American defender Ryan Adeleye was an unused substitute for Hapoel Be'er Sheva.
