PREVIEW: WEEKEND MEXICAN ACTION
Thursday, January 13, 2011
Daniel Antunez and Estudiantes have the tough task of bouncing back against Apertura champions Monterrey while Herculez Gomez and Pachuca host always-dangerous Toluca.

Estudiantes – Monterrey

A Friday night contest kicks off the second week of the Mexican Clausura with Daniel Antunez and Estudiantes welcoming in Monterrey to Estadio Tres de Marzo in Guadalajara.

Antunez started the season opener against Cruz Azul but was substituted off in the 67th minute during the team's 4-1 loss.

The former FC Inter man will hope to receive another starting assignment from head coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola.

Fellow American Sammy Ochoa did not feature in the opening weekend defeat and will aim to see some time off the bench versus Monterrey.

Despite a loss last week to San Luis, Monterrey still enter the match with plenty of swagger having won the 2010 Apertura.

The Rayados are led by Chilean striker Humberto ‘El Chupete' Suazo who put on a brilliant performance in the Apertura finals versus Santos.

Rubens Sambueza is suspended and unavailable for the hosts while William Paredes and Luis Perez will miss for the Rayados through suspension and injury respectively.

San Luis – Puebla

Edgar Castillo and Puebla hit the road and travel to San Luis Potosi on Saturday to face San Luis at Estadio Alfonso Lastras on Saturday.

Castillo started the opener last weekend but was substituted off after just a half of play in Puebla's 1-1 draw with Chivas.

He also picked up a yellow card in that first half.

The American defender will set out to make the starting 11 against the Potosinos who are feeling pretty good about themselves after downing 2010 Apertura champions Monterrey in the first week of play.

Puebla's offense has plenty of firepower and could be regarded as one of the best in Mexico especially after the exceptional goal scored last week by Ecuadorian forward Felix Borja.

Also joining Castillo and company is veteran Paraguayan forward Nelson Cuevas who spent the fall at Spanish second division club Albacete.

The only absence for Saturday's match is Puebla's Melvin Brown who is injured.

Pachuca - Toluca

The American duo of Jose Francisco Torres and Herculez Gomez return home for the first time in 2011 to square off against Toluca at Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca on Saturday.

Torres was not included in Pachuca's 18 man roster in last week's 0-2 win over Club America in El Azteca and it remains to be seen whether or not Torres will be part of the Tuzos' roster on Saturday.

Gomez came on for the final 20 minutes against America helping the club secure the shutout win.

The Diablos are always a tough foe and they are sure to be smarting a little from their 1-1 home draw against Pumas to open up the campaign.

All that said, Pachuca has made life difficult for Toluca in recent history at Estadio Hidalgo as the Diablos have only registered two wins in the last eight years on the Tuzos' home turf.

Both coaches are expected to have full squads at their disposal.

Notes

Isaac Acuna will hope to see time off the bench for Gallos Blancos at Atlas.

Jonathan Bornstein will hope to shake off his hamstring injury and be healthy in time for Tigres' home contest versus Necaxa on Saturday.
