RECAP: ST. MIRREN 0 - 1 RANGERS
Maurice Edu played a full 90 for the Rangers as they defeated St. Mirren 1-0 and stayed within five points of their arch-rival Celtic for top position of Scottish Premier League title.
Following a difficult midweek loss to Celtic in the Scottish Cup, the Rangers needed a road win over St. Mirren to maintain control of their own destiny for the league title. Having played two fewer games than Celtic so far this season, a five point deficit meant that a chance for the title was in their own hands.
After controlling the opening minutes, the Rangers finally moved ahead in the 24th minute when Kyle Bartley, on loan from Arsenal, headed home a cross from Madjid Bougherra to give the guests a 1-0 lead.
Rangers would continue to press for a second goal throughout the rest of the match and Edu came close on two occasions. Early in the second half John Fleck sent in a pass for the US international, but Edu hit his shot over the cross.
Later in the half, Edu received a pass from Steven Davis but sent a shot wide.
The loss kept St. Mirren in 11th place in the 12 team league. They currently have 22 points through 28 games. Next week they stay at home to host tenth place Aberdeen.
The Rangers remain in second place with 62 points through 26 games. They trail Celtic by five points but have played two fewer games. This Thursday they travel to Eindhoven to play PSV in the Europa league.
The Rangers return to Scottish Premier league play next Sunday when they host fourth place Kilmarnock
