Diego Chavarri's day was cut short due to an injury but Sporting Cristal still emerged victorious with a home win over Cienciano at Estadio San Martin in the Peruvian Primera Division.

Chavarri started the match at attacking midfielder but left the field in an ambulance after suffering an ankle injury.

Initially feared to be a long-term injury, team doctors later confirmed that it was just a second-degree sprain on Chavarri's right ankle and that the New York native will be back to training in weeks.

Chavarri also picked up a yellow card in the fourth minute of the contest.

As for the match itself, A very solid defensive effort carried Sporting for the bulk of the match until Miguel Ximenez's artful goal in the 54th decided the outcome.

Ximenez gathered in a ball and charged toward goal only to be met with onrushing Cienciano goalkeeper Walter Noriega.

Instead of trying to power a shot past Noriega, Ximenez elected to chip a looping shot over the head of the Colombian goalkeeper that worked to perfection sending the home fans into a frenzy.

The Sporting defense held on the rest of the way to secure the three points as they now sit fifth in the Primera Division standings.
