RECAP: VIBORG FF 2 - 0 FC HJØRRING
Babajide Ogunbiyi and Viborg put on a strong display on Sunday afternoon, seeing their attack come to life with a pair of goals while holding Hjørring scoreless to notch their first win of 2011.
The Greens looked to immediately stamp their authority on the game, coming out of the gates on the offensive and applying constant pressure on their visitors in the early going.
They came close ten minutes into the proceedings, after a series of corner kicks led to a header off the Hjørring crossbar followed shortly thereafter by a last-ditch clearance by a defending player.
They nabbed a deserved opening goal at the half hour mark when one of their regular incursions into their opponents' 18-yard box ended with the ball at the foot of Nicolai Melchiorsen, who poked it in from short range for the 1-0 lead.
While the scoreline held through the half, they quickly doubled the lead out of the break when a long free kick by Jeff Mensah passed inexplicably through several defenders and past the keeper for 2-0.
Hjørring gained some control in the middle stages of the half, however were unable to do much with their possession in the Viborg side of the field and were nearly victimized by the counter on several occasions.
The final chances fell to Viborg, however, with Marc Dal Hende seeing his shot saved on the line with nine minutes left, and the final whistle finally confirming the vital win for the hosts.
The result gives the Greens some breathing room above the drop zone, with the win taking them to 12th place and extending their gap ahead of the bottom three to two points.
Their next task will be to earn a positive result on the road against Fredericia, who had the weekend off after their scheduled game against Roskilde was postponed until May due to unplayable field conditions.
