RECAP: SPORTING CRISTAL 1 - 1 COBRESOL
After suffering an ankle sprain last month, Diego Chavarri returned action for Sporting Cristal when he entered Sunday's game in the 56th minute in a home draw with Cobresol.
With the game scoreless 10 minutes into the second half, Sporting Cristal's head coach Guillermo Rivarola called on the New York City-born Chavarri to provide some offense.
It was Argentine forward Claudio Velazquez, however, that broke the scoreless draw in favor of Cobresol in the 62nd minute when he volleyed home a corner kick from close range past Sporting Cristal keeper Erick Delgado.
The lead would not last long however when Sporting's Uruguayan forward Miguel Ximenez hammered home a loose ball in the six yard box for an equalizer in the 67th minute.
On Sporting Cristal's goal, Chavarri would have a crucial pass in the buildup when he hit a back heel pass that sprung right back Jean Cancar on an overlapping that lead to the pivotal cross.
With the draw, Sporting Cristal are now in 8th place in the Peruvian Primera Division with 11 points through eight games. The top of the standings is tight with only three points separating Sporting Cristal from third place Juan Aurich.
Sporting Cristal return to action next Saturday when they travel to take on seventh place Universidad Cesar Vallejo.
