RECAP: WEEKEND GERMAN ACTION
Edson Buddle's late substitute appearance was not enough to prevent a season opening loss by Ingolstadt while Matt Taylor and Paderborn posted a vital come-from-behind victory over Hansa Rostock.
FC St. Pauli 2 - 0 FC Ingolstadt 04
Edson Buddle was a late substitute for Ingolstadt, entering the game with the team already down by two goals as the fell on the road to FC St. Pauli in Hamburg on Saturday.
Ingolstadt head coach Benno Möhlmann went with a more defensive lineup in their opening at St. Pauli's Millerntor Stadion, putting Moritz Hoffman in front of a five-man midfield with Buddle on the bench.
After a scoreless first half scant of real chances for either team, the Schanzer almost struck seconds after the restart, as Brazilian midfielder Caiuby forced St. Pauli keeper Philipp Tschauner into a leaping save with a 17-yard shot to the middle of goal.
Malte Metzelder drew a yellow card for a hard foul on St. Pauli midfielder Fabian Boll, setting up a free kick for the hosts just outside the penalty area in the 51st minute. Boll took the set piece directly, blasting it through a hole in the wall and just inside the right post for the lead.
Ingolstadt pushed hard for an equalizer in the following minutes, forcing Tschauner into a series of saves in what was perhaps a man-of-the-match performance by the former 1860 keeper.
Despite the pressure, St. Pauli nearly doubled their lead in the 68th minute as Marvin Matip made a spectacular play to clear a shot by Deniz Naki off the line before it rolled in, however the hosts did manage to put the game out of reach barely one minute later.
A clearance by Marino Bilikov fell too close to goal, landing at the right foot of Boll several yards outside the penalty area, and the 32 year-old blasted his shot to the right side, leaving Kirchstein no chance.
Buddle entered the game seven minutes later in place of the exhausted Hartmann in an attempt to add more firepower to Ingolstadt's attempt for a come-back, but the St. Pauli defense held strong, securing the three points.
The loss puts Ingolstadt at the bottom of the standings after one game played, and they will hope to do better on Friday when they host Erzgebirge Aue.
Hansa Rostock - SC Paderborn 07
Matt Taylor saw just over 20 minutes of substitute action on Sunday afternoon, as SC Paderborn 07 rallied from an early deficit to score an impressive road victory over Hansa Rostock.
After a free-scoring pre-season campaign, Taylor nevertheless began the game on the bench, as Paderborn coach Roger Schmidt left fellow new arrival Nick Proschwitz as the lone striker in a more defensive setup.
The season was off to a rough start for Paderborn, as Rostock challenged early and took the lead in the 19th minute. Tobias Jänicke dropped in a cross from the right flank to the far side of the penalty area, which Tino Semmer side-footed in for 1-0.
Paderborn pulled even almost immediately after, when Daniel Brückner chested down a cross inside the area from Jens Wemmer and aimed it past Rostock keeper Kevin Müller for the 21st-minute equalizer.
Both teams kept a lid on matters for the next hour, with Taylor entering the game in the 68th minute with the game still even.
As the game looked headed for the draw, Paderborn snatched the three points with nine minutes remaining; Rolf-Christel Guié-Mien fed the ball to Proschwitz just outside the top of the area, and the former Hannover second-teamer evaded his defenders before firing a shot to the left of goal, sending his team back home with the win.
Paderborn will try to extend their perfect record to two games on Sunday whey they host Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Ricardo Clark watched from the bench on Friday as Eintracht Frankfurt began their season as 2. Bundesliga title favorites with a dramatic comeback from a two-goal deficit to beat Greuther Fürth 3-2.
Bobby Wood was not included on 1860's bench for their season-opening 3-1 loss on the road to newly-promoted Eintracht Braunschweig on Sunday.
Luis Robles watched from the bench on Sunday afternoon as Karlsruhe SC held on at home to beat MSV Duisburg by a 3-2 score.
