RECAP: MIDWEEK GERMAN ACTION
SCOTT PETERSON - Wednesday, August 3, 2011
SV Babelsberg and Amaechi Igwe picked up the home win against Rot-Weiß Erfurt in an early-season relegation battle Tuesday night in 3. Liga action.

SV Babelsberg 03 3 - 0 Rot Weiß Erfurt

Amaechi Igwe made his league debut for Babelsberg and went the distance in his side's drubbing of Erfurt securing vital points in their battle for survival.

After making his team debut this past weekend in a German Cup tie that saw his club on the losing end of a 2-0 score line, Igwe made his league debut joining Matthias Rudolph, Ronny Surma and Florian Grossert in defense.

Babelsberg head coach Dietmar Demuth made two changes to his lineup after the weekend loss against MSV Duisburg, starting Nicolas Hebisch in attack and Matthias Kühne in midfield for the injured Christian Groß and Mickael Nelson.

The guests had the better start and looked threatening, almost scoring in the sixth minute when Denis Weidlich hit the post. Igwe and his defensive teammates looked out of sorts early, but Erfurt could not capitalize.

After 20 minutes of play, Babelsberg had a great chance to take the lead against the run of play, when Nicolas Hebisch picked up the ball in the area and found a wide open Julian Prochnow, who rocketed his shot over the bar.

In the 23rd minute, Erfurt captain Rudolf Zedi was unlucky not to have scored as his header was sent just wide of keeper Unger's post. Babelsberg then started to gradually take control of the contest, but failed to generate any clear-cut scoring chances.

Just like in the first half, Erfurt was more aggressive and threatening, while Babelsberg just reacted to their opponents. However, despite two great chances in the 49th and 59th minutes, Erfurt could not punish an unorganized Babelsberg team that was struggling to get anything going. A minute later Igwe received his first yellow card to get on the stat sheet.

In the 65th minute the deadlock was finally broken, but it was the home team striking in a game that Erfurt was dominating, as new acquisition Benjamin Kaufmann turned neatly in the box to beat his defender and fire past keeper Rickert.

On 73 minutes, Erfurt was reduced to ten men after defender Thomas Ströhl saw red for a foul on Hebisch, who was on a breakaway. Grossert's ensuing free kick took a nasty deflection past Rickert, making in 2-0. Substitute

Nelson finished of Erfurt in the 88th minute, by slotting home after Hebisch dribbled past a couple of defenders before finding his attacking partner alone in the box.

Igwe and Babelsberg continue their season-long quest for survival on Saturday when they take on Wacker Burghausen away.
