RECAP: WEEKEND DUTCH ACTION
AZ Alkmaar went on the road and continued their impressive start to the season with a victory over FC Groningen while Helmond Sport fell to red hot FC Eindhoven at home.
FC Groningen 0-3 AZ Alkmaar
American Jozy Altidore got the starting nod and went 76 minutes in AZ's road victory on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors struck just moments in to the game, when Nick Viergever found Brett Holman's corner-kick fall to the unmarked defender who easily thundered it home to give Alkmaar the lead.
The home team nearly equalized just before half-time when Lorenzo Burnet's cross found the head of Leandro Bacuna, but the striker but the well-placed cross just over the crossbar.
After picking up his second yellow card of the season in the 68th minute, Altidore was replaced eight minutes later by Dutch midfielder Erik Falkenburg.
Half-time substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson would double the score in the 79th minute when his right-footed blast from the top corner past an outstretched Brian van Loo.
Midfielder Rasmus Elm scored the third and final goal just five minutes later with a stunning free-kick from 17-yards.
Alkmaar will take a week-long break from Eredivisie play while players, including Altidore, report for international play. Their next league game will be on September 10th against Vitesse.
Helmond Sport 0-1 FC Eindhoven
Helmond Sport held strong for ninety minutes but couldn't find the back of the net in their one goal loss to FC Eindhoven on Friday evening.
Wisconsin native Charles Kazlauskas slid in to the center of midfield on Friday, in a move that hoped to slow down a potent Eindhoven attack.
The home team's Erik Quekel was booked in the 17th minute after a rash challenge by the striker, it was the only caution of the game for Helmond.
The second half started with a pair of bookings for Eindhoven striker Leon Kantelberg and midfielder Theo Lucius minutes apart.
Just three minutes from the full-time whistle Rob Van Boekel put the visitors ahead for good with a sublime chip from just outside the penalty area that caught Helmond 'keeper Björn Sengier well off his line.
Wesley Vanbelle and Josemar Makiavala continued the bookings for the visitors following the goal, both picking up yellow cards, as they did everything in their power to hold on for the away win.
Helmond has a break in action this upcoming weekend, before resuming play on Sunday September 12th against FC Zwolle.
