RECAP: WEEKEND PORTUGUESE ACTION
Tony Taylor and Caleb Patterson-Sewell were both in the starting lineup for Atlético and helped stretch their lead atop the Liga Orangina with another shutout victory.
Leixões SC 0-1 Atlético CP
In a matchup between the top two teams in Portugal's second division, Caleb Patterson-Sewell's fifth shutout of the season carried Atlético past Leixões.
A third minute goal from Brazilian midfielder Silva was all Patterson-Sewell and his staunch defense would need in their visit to the Estádio do Mar.
João de Deus' men have now conceded a mere three goals in seven league games this season, though the hosts were not without chances.
They nearly leveled the score within minutes of Silva's strike, but Patterson-Sewell saved Eduardo Jumisse's shot and Feliciano agonizingly steered the rebound wide.
In the second half substitute Carlos Manuel Fangueiro even had Patterson-Sewell beaten, but saw his attempt find the woodwork.
Tony Taylor and the Atlético attack were also able to pressure the hosts on multiple occasions, notably when the Florida native put a dangerous 12th minute cross into the box from his right wing position.
Just the one goal would come, however, giving the team from Lisbon 16 points through seven games. They are now four points clear at the top.
Atlético will next line up against SC Covilhã at home on 10/30.
Oguchi Onyewu was an unused substitute in Sporting's demolition of Gil Vicente, as Domingos Paciencia opted not to rush him back from a groin injury. Two goals apiece from Diego Capel and Valeri Bojinov, combined with single strikes from Daniel Carriço and Ricky van Wolfswinkel, carried the Lisbon giants to 6-1 victory. Sporting remain three points back of league leaders Porto and Benfica.
