RECAP: RED BULL SALZBURG 2 - 1 LASK LINZ
Linz smelled the sweet aroma of an upset against the mighty Red Bulls, but went a man down and conceded two late goals to get knocked out of the ÖFB Samsung Cup.
American Shawn Barry saw a return to coach Walter Schachner's starting eleven, and went the distance for the Linz back line in the loss.
After a scoreless opening period the Erste Liga club jumped onto the scoreboard six minutes into the second half thanks to Benjamin Freudenthaler, who pounced on a loose ball left uncleared by the Salzburg defense to bring Linz into the 1-0 lead.
However, a quarter hour later Linz's Attila Varga saw a straight red for needlessly throwing the ball in frustration at German midfielder Simon Cziommer.
Salzburg only need a dozen minutes to capitalize on the one-man advantage, getting an equalizer from a Franz Schiemer header off a corner past Pavao Pervan in the 72nd minute.
With steam in their nostrils, the Red Bulls surged into the lead in the 79th minute thanks to Stefan Maierhofer, a 53rd-minute substitute for Luigi Bruins. The former Austrian national team regular received a delivery from the right wing from Cziommer, and made no mistake to head home the winner past Pervan for the hosts.
While the Red Bulls advance to the quarterfinals of the ÖFB Samsung Cup, Linz return home to host SV Scholz Grödig on Saturday night.
