RECAP: AALESUNDS FK 2 - 0 STABAEK IF
Mikkel Diskerud played the full 90 minutes in Stabaek's central midfield, however a goal on either side of the half by Aalesunds FK extended their winless streak to three games.
While mathematically stil able to reach the top three spots in the standings prior to Thursday's game, the unlikely string of results required amongst the numerous teams above them essentially meant that Stabaek had little more than pride to play for.
In a similar position in the standings, although somewhat closer to the drop zone, Aalesunds were essentially using this game as well as their remaining dates as warm-ups for their November 6 Norwegian Cup final clash against Brann, and looked the far more prepared of the two teams.
The hosts created the most chances in the early going, and were first on the scoreboard two minutes before the half. Michael Michael Barrantes took a shot, which was initially blocked, but Frederik Ulvestad recovered the ball and returned it to the Costa Rican midfielder for a 21-yard shot into the corner of goal.
They wrapped up the win two minutes past the hour in standard fashion, with Jo Nymo Matland sending in a free kick from just outside the area, which Peter Orry Larsen headed in for the final 2-0 score.
As the game neared its end, Stabaek pressed heavily to pull one back, with Vegar Eggen Hedenstad coming close with a free kick in the 76th minute and Pálmi Rafn Pálmason hitting the crossbar with a header inside the final ten minutes, but luck was on the side of the guests as they held on for the shut-out.
With the loss, Stabaek are passed by Aalesund and fall into tenth place in the Tippeligaen standings. They will have little break before again taking the field, as they visit Sogndal IL on Sunday afternoon.
