JAMIE HILL - Wednesday, November 2, 2011
The USSF announced today the first U-23 roster since naming Caleb Porter manager last month.

The 31-man camp will be held in Duisburg, Germany and will also include 11 players eligible for the 2013 U-20 World Cup. The training camp will run from November 7-16 and represents the a first look at the players who may represent the US in Olympic qualifying next spring.

Although Caleb Porter will remain with his Akron squad, the Euro-heavy camp will be overseen by USSF Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna.

A number of players expected to play key roles for the U-23 team are absent from the roster and are expected to join the senior national team for friendlies against France and Slovenia. This group includes Bill Hamid, Timothy Chandler, Daniel Williams, Brek Shea, and Jozy Altidore.

Players from the eight remaining MLS playoff teams have also been omitted, although those whose clubs are eliminated after this week's conference semifinals could be last-minute additions, according to the USSF.

The roster is headlined by several players who have already received a cap for the US national team, such as Sean Johnson and Mikkel Diskerud. Gale Agbossoumonde also made a brief appearance for the senior team in a friendly in late 2010.

Others have made recent breakthroughs for their clubs; Perry Kitchen, Ethan White, Josh Gatt, Zarek Valentin, Dilly Duka, and Royal-Dominique Fennell have all become starters this season.

During the first camp, the USSF staff will hope to answer some of the questions looming over this U-23 team. The player pool lacks depth in certain areas, such as central defense.

U-20 manager Tab Ramos will be on hand to evaluate the players who are eligible for his team. While the U-20 contingent is mostly comprised of players who are long shots to make the U-23 team, a lack of options has put Anthony Brooks is in a strong position to seize a place in the defensive line.

A notable omission from the U-20 squad is Bayern Munich midfielder Fabian Hürzeler. Hürzeler is provisionally cap-tied to Germany after appearing in a U-17 qualifier and will need to file a one-time permanent switch to play for the United States.
