RECAP: WEEKEND BELGIAN ACTION
Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht suffered only their third defeat of the season, while Tristan Bowen saw some playing time in Roeselare's stalemate in weekend Belgian action.
Mechelen 2 - 1 Anderlecht
Anderlecht's short trip north was all in vain as the league leaders were unable to handle Mechelen, who are in the bottom half of the standings. For the home team David Destorme and Alessandro Cordaro hit the back of the net, while Matias Suarez scored for the visitors.
American midfielder Sacha Kljestan went the full 90 minutes in the losing effort and also had a chance to get onto the scoreboard but Der Kakkers number one Olivier Renard, made the save.
Anderlecht started the better of the teams and they could have taken an early lead but Tom De Sutter's strike was saved by the post. Suarez also had a chance which came to nothing in the end. Between these two threats however Mechelen's Diabang tried out Silvio Proto's reflexes between the posts as well.
The hosts silenced the traveling band of les Mauves fans when Renard booted the ball forward and found Destorme and the Belgian midfielder struck with gusto and lit up the scoreboard in just the 17th minute.
Anderlecht pushed forward to retaliate and Fernando had a chance, followed by Kljestan's, before Renard saved against Suarez and saw the rebound fall to Milan Jovanovic who hit it into the wrong side of the netting. It was up to Proto to make a fine save against Cordaro just before the half, to keep the deficent at one.
In the second half Polish international Marcin Wasilewski was unlucky not to score off a free kick after De Sutter was fouled. It took exacty an hour of play before Anderlecht managed to get on the scoreboard themselves when the Argentinian front man knotted things up.
Being lulled into a false sense of security as they fought for the winner, Cordaro found a winner of his own at the other end in the 72nd minute to hand the Brussels boys a rare loss.
Although picking up nothing on the road, Gent also suffered a shock loss at the hands of Beerschot which allowed les Mauves to maintain their top spot. Anderlecht will hope to get back to winning ways next Sunday when they welcome Lokeren to Stade Vanden Stock.
Back from injury, Devann Yao came onto the field in the 70th minute for Boussu-Dour and netted a goal in the 3-1 victory over fellow strugglers Tienen. Marko Obradovic netted the other two for all three points.
Tristan Bowen played half of the second half as KSV Roeselare and Brussels netted three goals apiece at home. Next up it will be Yank-vs-Yank when Yao and Boussu head to Roeselare to take on Bowen's side.
