RECAP: WEEKEND ENGLISH ACTION
Brad Friedel and Tottenham Hotspur climbed to third in the Premier League standings as they beat Sunderland, while Tim Howard and Everton tied Zak Whitbread and Norwich City at Goodison Park.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Sunderland
Brad Friedel and Tottenham Hotspur were victorious at home against Sunderland in Premier League action this weekend.
The American ‘keeper started and went the distance for Spurs.
After a dull first half that saw no goals, Spurs got on the board first in the 61st minute when Roman Pavlyuchenko drove an impressive ball from the edge of the box after Rafael van der Vaart sent him a through pass.
Nicklas Bendtner nearly tied the game with moments left, but his left footed shot went wide of the goal.
Spurs now have a two point cushion for third place in the Premier League ahead of Chelsea.
Sunderland ate just two points above the relegation zone.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto was booked for Spurs, while Kieran Richardson and David Vaughan received yellow cards for Sunderland.
Tottenham take on Chelsea on Thursday, while Sunderland travel to play Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday.
Everton 1-1 Norwich City
Tim Howard and Everton tied Zak Whitbread and Norwich City in a clash of Americans this weekend.
Both Americans started and went the distance.
Norwich opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Grant Holt turned his defender and shot home from 10 yards out to give the Canaries the lead.
Everton equalized late in the game, when a Royston Drenthe shot was purposefully tipped in the net by teammate Leon Osman in the 82nd minute of the game.
Despite the clear advantage in shots and possession, Everton were left to settle for the draw.
Phil Neville was booked for the Toffees, while Kyle Naughton received a yellow card for Norwich City.
Everton host Swansea City on Wednesday, while Norwich travel to play Wolverhampton on Tuesday.
Aston Villa 0-2 Liverpool
Brad Guzan and Aston Villa went down to Liverpool in a Sunday Premier League clash.
Guzan started and went the distance for Aston Villa.
Liverpool opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Stuart Downing's corner reached Craig Bellamy who knocked home from close range.
Minutes later Liverpool struck again, when Bellamy's corner found Martin Skrtel whose header beat a helpless Guzan.
The two first half goals were enough to put Liverpool ahead for good.
Charles N'Zogbia was booked for Aston Villa, while Charlie Adam and Bellamy received yellows for Liverpool.
Villa hosts Arsenal in the midweek, while Liverpool travel to play Wigan Athletic.
Fulham 2-0 Bolton Wanderers
Clint Dempsey and Fulham were victorious over lowly Bolton.
Dempsey started and went the distance for Fulham, while also notching the Cottagers first goal.
The American finished a header after an impressive delivery from Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz.
A minute later Dempsey found Ruiz with a brilliant pass. He chipped the ball over Bolton ‘keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen.
The first half flurry of goals was enough to put Fulham ahead for good.
Danny Murphy was booked for Fulham, while Nigel Reo-Coker, Fabrice Muamba, and Gretar Rafn Steinsson received yellows for Bolton.
Fulham host Manchester United in the midweek, while Bolton travel to play Blackburn.
West Ham United 1-0 Barnsely
Daniel Potts and West Ham United beat Barnsley in weekend Championship action.
The young American started and went the distance in his first game out for West Ham's first team.
Papa Bouba Diop scored off of a Mark Noble service in the 6th minute. The early goal was enough for West Ham.
Diop was booked for West Ham, while Craig Davies received a yellow card for Barnsley.
West Ham take on Birmingham City next week while Barnsley host Blackpool.
Carlisle United 2-2 Wycombe Wanderers
Frank Simek returned from injury in Carlisle United's tie against Wycombe Wanderers.
Simek started and went the distance.
Rory Loy opened the scoring early for Carlisle, as he fired home in the 2nd minute of the game.
Anthony McNamee and Marcello Trotta responded for Wycombe with strikes in the 28th and 36th minutes respectively.
United's Bernard Zoko equalized the game in the 86th minute.
James Berrett and Zoko received yellows for Carlisle, while Leon Johnson and Matt Bloomfield were booked for Wycombe.
Carlilse plays Preston North End on Boxing day, while Wycombe hosts Exeter City.
Chesterfield 1-1 Walsall
Anton Peterlin and Walsall settled for a draw against Chesterfield in League One play.
Peterlin started and went the distance for Walsall.
Alex Nicholls opened the scoring for Walsall at the half hour mark, while Jack Lester equalized in the dying moments of the game for Chesterfield.
