RECAP: ANDERLECHT 3 - 1 GENT
In midweek league play Gent traveled to Brussels to take on Anderlecht and lost that one 3-1 thanks to a Milan Jovanovic brace and a Mattias Suarez strike in the European capital.
Kicking off week 22 of league play, the Buffaloes looked to close the six point gap between themselves and first place Anderlecht but it was not to be in the Tuesday evening rain, as they saw the gap grow to nine points.
In the game where Sacha Kljestan again went the distance for les Mauves, the home team found themselves behind after just six minutes when Danish midfielder Jesper Jorgensen shocked Stade Constant Vanden Stock with his strike.
Anderlecht got back on level terms however when the former Liverpool man Jovanovic struck in the 29th minute. Les Mauves' corner kick was punched away by Sergio Padt between the sticks, right to the Serbian who was at the top left of the 18 yard box. Composing himself, Jovanovic looped the ball over the crowded box and right into the back of the net.
Eight minutes later the Serbian hit his second of the night. Front man Suarez crashed into the box and fired at goal only to see the effort parried away by the Dutch keeper. Yet again, the ball fell to Jovanovic who tucked it away from seven yards out.
Anderlecht and Suarez put the game to bed with five minutes remaining on the clock after Dieumerci Mbokani found him unmarked inside the "D". The Congoese sent the ball to the Argentinian who sent it past the shell-shocked keeper.
Anderlecht will next travel to Beerschot on Friday night and hope to put more distance between themselves and the chasing pack. They came away with a 3-2 win over the Flemish side last September in their first meeting.
