Former US national team head coach Alketas Panagoulias passed away on Monday at the age of 78.

Panagoulias coached the US national team from 1983-1985 and was also the head coach of the US Olympic team for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. In that tournament, the US defeated Costa Rica, drew Egypt, and fell 1-0 to Italy.

Born in Greece, Panagoulias also coached the Greek national team from 1992-94 where he helped guide the team to its first ever World Cup at the 1994 tournament in the United States.

Panagoulias will be laid to rest in Falls Church, Virginia where he lived for over two decades.
