Mike Grella starred in Scunthorpe United's win over Derby County, while Will Packwood played 75 minutes in Birmingham City's rout of Barnet.

Derby County 5-5 (6-7 Penalty Kicks) Scunthorpe United

Mike Grella and Scunthorpe United were victorious in dramatic fashion over Derby County in League Cup play.

Grella started, played 120 minutes, and scored in Scunthorpe's big win on Tuesday.

Conor Doyle did not see the field for Derby County.

The Rams went up 3-0 in the first 40 minutes of the game, but a roaring comeback from Scunthorpe managed to send the game into extra time at 5-5.

After 30 minutes of extra time, neither team could find the back of the net and penalty kicks were ordered.

Scunthorpe was victorious 7-6 in penalties.

Grella's goal came in the 63rd minute of the game as his shot went off the post and into the net to make the game 3-2 at that point.

Josh Walker, Robert Grant, Grella, and Conner Jennings were booked for Scunthorpe, while Derby's Theo Robinson was yellow as well.

Scunthorpe starts their League One season this weekend against Crawley Town, while Derby takes on Sheffield Wednesday.

Birmingham City 5-1 Barnet

Will Packwood and Birmingham City thumped Barnet in League Cup play.

Packwood started and was subbed off in the 75th minute because of injury. The young defender played at right back, even though his regular position is at central defense.

Jonathan Spector did not feature for Birmingham.

City were up 2-0 at the half, as Marlon King and Steven Caldwell saw the back of the net.

Darren Ambrose scored early in the second half for City, while Peter Lovenkrands and Wade Elliott scored in stoppage time.

Birmingham opens up their Championship season againstCharlton Athletic this weekend, while Barnet opens League Two play against Port Vale.
