RECAP: SK RAPID 3 - 0 SV MATTERSBURG
A pair of goals from Terrence Boyd and a third from Christoph Trimmel propelled Rapid Vienna to victory in front of a home crowd on Sunday afternoon.
The walk in the park over the Burgenlanders helped the Viennese keep the pace in the Bundesliga, a wind behind leaders Austria Vienna.
The American striker up top in the Green and White continued his offensive output opening the scoring after a dozen minutes and adding his fourth season tally in the 66th minute, before exiting with a quarter hour to play.
Boyd dodged a bullet within the first minute, nearly heading in a Torsten Röcher header, but Rapid netminder Lukas Königshofer was there to tap off the post.
The 21-year old bounced back and opened the scoring after 12 minutes, advancing with Christoph Trimmel as he charged down the right flank and and delivered into the box. Boyd found it easy to slip in front of sleeping defender Martin Rodler and tap home for the 1-0 lead.
Mattersburg's Patrick Farkas had to exit the game injured in the opening minutes of the second half, allowing the hosts to sneak in a second. Corralling once again a pass from Steffen Hofmann, Trimmel this time pierced into the box facing Lukas Rath, faked twice, and fired beneath the arm of Thomas Borenitsch to double the lead after 49 minutes.
Boyd capped off a memorable day with a towering header off a cross from Markus Katzer. Charging down the left flank, the Austrian swung in for Boyd at the right edge of the box, who rose over Rath for the textbook header and the 3-0 advantage.
Rapid will ride the momentum of the win as they host neighbors to the south FC Admira on Saturday.
