RECAP: WEEKEND DUTCH ACTION
Jozy Altidore notched another goal for AZ as they picked up a point in Den Haag while Charles Kazlauskas and Helmond lost in Rotterdam.
ADO Den Haag 2 - 2 AZ Alkmaar
Jozy Altidore played the whole match up top for AZ, netting the tying goal as they picked up a draw in Den Haag.
AZ grabbed the game's initial lead in the 22nd minute when Nick Viergever found an unmarked Eric Falkenburg with a long pass and the midfielder slotted the ball into an empty net.
The lead was short lived, though, as Carlo Vincento capitalized on an errant Etienne Reijnen back pass to make it 1-1 in the 34th minute. Reijnen tried to give AZ keeper Esteban Alvarado possession, but Vincento intercepted and beat the stunned Costa Rican.
Another Reijnen error gifted Den Haag the lead in the 47th minute. The defender dragged down Rydell Poepon in the box and the ref awarded the hosts a penalty which Danny Holla put away.
Altidore scored in style to tie it up for AZ in the 64th minute. The striker ran onto a ball at the left side of the box and flicked the sphere over his head before curling left footed shot while falling down past Den Haag keeper Robert Zwinkles to secure the draw. The goal was Altidore's ninth in the league so far, good enough for third place in the Eredivisie.
AZ face FC Gronigen next Saturday in the Eredivisie while Den Haag take on PSV.
Sparta Rotterdam 2 - 0 Helmond Sport
Charles Kazlauskas played 64 minutes for Helmond Sport as they fell on the road against Sparta Rotterdam.
Helmond started the match well, but couldn't cash in any of their opportunities. Davy Brouwers and Sebastian Stachnik were particularly active for the guests, but Sparta keeper Nico Pellatz turned their attempts away each time.
Sparta took control of the game in the second half with Sandro Calabro putting them ahead in the 51st minute when the striker lofted a shot over Wouter van der Steen.
Kazlauskas made way for Emrullah Guvenc 13 minutes later as Helmond coach Eric Meijers added an additional forward to try to spark his team's attack.
The move didn't pay off as Sparta expanded their lead in the 81st minute through Steef Nieuwendaal. After receiving a cross from Iliass Bel Hassani, Nieuwendahl sent a sizzling shot past van der Steen to end the scoring.
A reckless tackle earned Helmond's Juanito Sequeira up a red card three minutes into injury time, adding to the visitor's woes.
Helmond get back to work next Friday when they host Volendam while Sparta travel to take on Fortuna Sittard.
