RECAP: SK RAPID 0 - 2 WOLFSBERGER AC
A depleted Rapid eleven conceded an embarrassing victory at home to the league's promoted newcomers, thanks to a pair from Christian Falk.
Rapid coach Peter Schöttel brought on Terrence Boyd at the half for a 45-minute shift, after looking to 19-year old Dominik Starkl for the start at the top.
Christian Falk brought the guests into the surprise lead within six minutes after nodding home a cross from Michael Liendl. The Wolfsburger midfielder outperformed Rapid's Markus Katzer in a duel and found space to loop a perfect pass into the box where Falk stood for the header from six yards out past Lukas Königshofer for the early 1-0 lead.
Without standard starters Stefen Hofmann, Deni Alar, and Christopher Trimmel coach Schöttel tried to shuffle up his lineup by bringing on Boyd at the intermission.
Yet, the Wolves were able to strike again early, this time just three minutes after the break, when once again Falk got on the end of a cross, this time from Spaniard Jacobo Ynclán on the left side. Keeper Königshofer was able to get his fingers on the ball, but it deflected to the feet of an unguarded Falk, who used his head to push it over the line from a few feet in front of the net for the 2-0 lead and eventual winner.
After the much needed break from midweek games, a battered Rapid will regroup against SV Mattersburg on Saturday.
