Wellington Phoenix fell out of the top six in the A-League following another lackluster effort on Saturday in a loss to Adelaide United.

Alex Smith started the game on the bench but came on at the half for Wellington.

Marcelo Carrusca opened the scoring for Adelaide in the 19th minute when his long free kick was misjudged by Wellington keeper Mark Paston and bounced into the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Just five minutes later the Argentine forward would grab his second goal of the game when he broke into the box on the left side and fired an unstoppable shot past Paston into the lower corner of the net to double the lead at 2-0 for Adelaide.

In first half stoppage time Adelaide found a third goal when Portuguese midfielder Fabio Ferreira took advantage of a defensive breakdown and easily finished from close range for a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, Adelaide shifted to a more defensive approach but Wellington were able to get on the board in the 81st minute through Dani Sanchez who was making his return from a long knee injury that has sidelined him for most of the season.

In second half stoppage time, Wellington nearly found a second when they were awarded a penalty but Tyler Boyd's penalty was saved by Adelaide keeper Eugene Galekovic.

Wellington will now aim to reverse their two game losing streak on Friday when they host league leaders Central Coast Mariners at Westpac Stadium.
