After recovering from yet another serious knee injury, USMNT midfielder Benny Feilhaber has told YA that he is glad to be back in action, and looking to reestablish himself in the lineup at Danish Superliga team AGF Aarhus.
"Its been great to be back out there playing football after so long out of the game with my injury," the UCLA product said. "I finally am feeling like myself again, and feel like I can really do well here once I'm fully fit."
The 2007 Gold Cup star has struggled through two injury riddled seasons since leaving Hamburg in Germany's Bundesliga two summers ago. He says he is getting his game form back after the extended layoff.
"I'm still definitely a bit rusty as I have not played a game in such a long time. I think I will need a couple more games to find my feet fully again."
Feilhaber says he is looking forward to closing out the season on a high note, and establishing himself in the coach Erik Rassmussen's plans for next season.
"I think that the coach will really try to utilize me for the final games in the year to get a better idea of how he is going to use me next season," Feilhaber says. "He wants to give me the opportunity to play and show him where my best position is."
The former U-20 national team standout, who suffered through a traumatic season in England's Premiere League with Derby County before moving on to Denmark, has found hmself deployed in a variety of roles by Rassmussen during his return - including a brief stint as support striker several weeks ago against Copenhagen - but is ultimately happy to just be on the field.
"It was a bit of a surprise," he admits of his role against Copenhagen. "I have never really played that position, but its a bit similar to playing as an offensive midfielder, which im more accustomed to."
"It will be interesting to see where [the coach] finds is the best spot for me, but at this point I think the most important thing is me simply playing at all. Regardless where he puts me on the field, minutes right now is what i need and what will help me get back into form."
Feilhaber has played in five games since his return, after sitting out nearly the whole season with a knee injury suffered in the early weeks of the tournament last year.
Aarhus enter the final four-game stretch of their season when they host eights-place Esbjerg on Thursday night. |
