WHITBREAD DENIES CARDIFF CITY RUMOR
Arch Bell - Tuesday, June 30, 2009
Current Millwall defender Zak Whitbread says that there is no substance behind any talk of a move to Championship club Cardiff City.

This summer has already seen the Texas native linked with Scottish club Rangers and Premiership clubs Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland.

Recently reports have surfaced that have Whitbread heading to Wales to join up with the Bluebirds, however the defender denies a transfer is in the works.

"There is nothing to the Cardiff rumors," Whitbread confirmed to YA. "There is really not much going on at all as far as me moving somewhere. I see all of the speculation in the papers and it's really just talk."

The play of the former Liverpool Academy player during the 2008-2009 League One season is a large reason why his name has come up in transfer talk. Whitbread led Millwall to the brink of promotion to the Championship only to fall to Scunthorpe in the promotion playoff final.

With that disappointment now in the rear view mirror, the former Houstonian appears ready to join back up with the Lions to make another run at promotion.

"Preseason practice starts tomorrow so I'm going back to Millwall and will be back with the club in training," he continued.

While Whitbread's name was bouncing around different European club rumor mills, talk arose of U.S. national team head coach Bob Bradley including the former U.S. Under-20 player on the roster for July's Gold Cup.

As enticing as playing for the Red, White and Blue might have been, Whitbread acknowledges that his odds of landing a roster spot were slim.

"I wasn't even really thinking about it to be honest. Certainly I would have loved to have been called and represented, but I've had my head down working hard and training so I didn't pay it much thought," he shrugged.

Whitbread enters his fifth season with the southeastern London club where he has appeared in over 100 matches and has scored four goals.

Another example of Bradley failing miserably. There is no reason he shouldn't be on the Gold Cup roster.

I think he should aim higher than Cardiff! A move to any Prem team would be fantastic or even a move to the continent.

As for a Gold Cup roster spot... why not!?!?! Look at some of the names that are on the roster!
