USA Under-20 coach Thomas Rongen has announced the roster for the first camp of the 2011 cycle which will begin with a camp in Chula Vista, California on December 16.
The roster will contain 17 players from the recent Under-17 team that competed in the 2009 World Cup in Nigeria. That team advanced out of group play into the round of 16 where they lost 2-1 to Italy. The best players on that team, Luis Gil, Jack McInerney and Stefan Jerome are among the inclusions.
Also included in this roster is Sebastian Lletget. The talented midfielder, who was a key player for the U17 team during their World Cup qualification, did not play for the World Cup team due to unspecified reasons. Various comments he has made this year to the press have given rise to questions about his allegiance to the US Soccer program. His inclusion here should indicate that he is still very much a part of the American program.
Another notable inclusion to this roster is Will Bates. The forward from Chester, Virginia is the only player on the roster from the University of Virginia who yesterday became the 2009 NCAA national champions with a shootout victory over the University of Akron in the championship game. Bates, a freshman, has been a regular starter this year for the Cavaliers. He scored his biggest goal of the season in a 3-0 win against the University of Maryland in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Bates has been involved with US Soccer before as he played with the USA U18 team that competed in the 2009 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.
Central defender Gale Agbossoumonde and midfielder Dillion Powers will take part in the camp and both players are the only two players eligible for the 2011 U20 World Cup that played on the USA 2009 U20 World Cup team in Egypt. That team had a disappointing campaign and finished with a 1-2-0 record and failed to advance out of their group.
Head Coach Thomas Rongen will be coaching his fourth cycle as the head coach of the USA U20 program. While the 2009 U20 World Cup suffered disappointing results at the World Cup, Rongen's teams in both 2003 and 2007 advanced to the quarterfinals in their respective World Cups.

of course he's still coaching! isn't bradley still coaching? as mike said, we need to get rid of the 'old boy' network but since the old boys run the whole show, who's gonna get rid of them?
i just don't understand how these guys get these jobs and say they 'represent' US Soccer. hell, i didnt' vote for them!! its like FIFA - a bunch of idiots in charge of the show. if you ask around europe, you'll hear that they have the same situations with incompetents in charge. its the way of the world now boys and i guess we just have to get used to it.

we definitely need to change coach, US Soccer Federation need to get rid of the "Good Old Boys" network. Lets breath new life in the U-20 program, bring in a new coach who don't feel he is entitle to the position. If it was any where else in the world, he would have been let go right after the U-20 Cup
